Product Look
For this project, students at Purdue University were assigned to create a new product and packaging for an existing brand.

Design Statement
After several rounds of ideation, I finally came to a successful system of packaging for my product. By including the necessary items to grow your own coffee, the customer can see everything they would be getting. But as a bonus, also included is a tote bag to contain the products, and a Vienna coffee cup to drink their coffee from once they are finished growing. I was able to use the original Vienna logotype for the products, but I also added new graphics and color schemes. The products and their identities help expand Vienna’s customer market, and may even help competition between brands like Starbucks in the home coffee market.

Logotype
Students were assigned the task of creating a logotype for this project. Beginning with a photo of an animal and making an illustration, that illustration would be used to create the final wordmark.

Design Statement
I went through several iterations of this design, ranging from different font colors and organizations. In the end, I decided that a simple combination of my final head design, and the interstate mono font from my wordmark would be sufficient to convey my design to the viewer. The curve placed at the bottom of the l’s stroke is reminiscent of a tail, making the combined e and husky head reminiscent of a whole dog. I argue that this design is effective because of its simplicity and clearness of message.

Movie Poster
Students were assigned the task of creating a movie poster in Photoshop for a made-up movie. This project gave students experience in Photoshop text effects and other techniques.

Design Statement
The main idea behind the poster I was creating was to bring the viewer’s attention through the eye in the center of the poster. This draws the eye of the viewer in, and then they notice the other design elements, such as the ringed city, the tentacles, and the boat heading straight towards it. Once the viewer has seen these elements, they are able to read the text and learn information about the movie after the poster brings them interest. All of these elements together create a balanced composition that conveys the meaning and information in the poster.

Poster Design
Students were assigned to create a poster conveying information about an event or topic. Through the use of image manipulation or illustration, students gained experience in text layout and text hierarchy.
